The entire figure is carved in wood; the mask is made of ivory, carved, engraved, and stained with black ink. The kimono is girded with an obi belt. The goddess Okame is depicted as a chubby, pleasant, smiling woman. Signature on the underside: Hojitsu. 19th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan. Sculpture. Height 4.0 cm, width 2.6 cm., A small carved wooden figure in brown tones sits on a reflective light gray surface against a soft gray background; the figure appears to be in a seated, curled posture with long textured hair flowing over its back and an arm raised near its head, and the carved surface shows patterned geometric details and smoothly rounded shapes with subtle darker brown shading.
