Netsuke in the shape of Daikoku and Ebisu, Ryôji fl. ca. 1886–1900? sculptor, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912, figurines, netsuke, Daikoku deity, Ebisu deity, carps, rats, sea waves, mythology. From the group of seven gods of all happiness come two figures, finely carved in a miniature rocky landscape with a bridge: Daikoku, sitting on a rat and holding his inherent attribute—a hammer—in his left hand and a bag on his back; and Ebisu holding a fishing rod and riding a giant fish. The miniature is 3.9–4.0 cm high/wide, carved with meticulous details: facial features, scales on the fish, bamboo leaves on openwork rocks, the rat's fur, and the rodent's eyes marked with microscopic inlays of black-dyed bone. 4th quarter of the 19th century, Japan., A small carved object in shades of beige, tan, and brown sits centered against a smooth gray background, showing a glossy surface and a soft reflection beneath it; the carving depicts a group of organic shapes with textured holes and contours, a detailed animal head with ears and fur-like carving emerging from the top, and a human-like figure with a rounded hat and a rounded object held near the animal, all rendered in varying warm beige and brown tones.
