Netsuke in the shape of Daikoku and Ebisu, Ryôji fl. ca. 1886–1900? sculptor, Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912, figurine netsuke katabori, 4th quarter of the 19th century, Japan. Finely carved miniature rocky landscape with a bridge showing Daikoku seated on a rat holding a hammer in his left hand and a bag on his back, and Ebisu holding a fishing rod and riding a giant fish. Meticulous details include facial features, fish-scale outlines, bamboo leaves on openwork rocks, the rat’s fur, and the rodent’s eyes marked with microscopic inlays of black-dyed bone. Height 3.9 cm; width 4.0 cm., A small carved figurine in shades of beige and brown sits against a gray background and is reflected faintly on a glossy surface; the carving depicts a group of figures including a person holding a rounded object above their head, another seated or leaning figure with rolled clothing details, and an animal with pointed ears; the base of the carving resembles an irregular porous rock with hollows and flowing carved patterns, and the entire piece shows areas of darker brown shading in the recesses and lighter beige on raised surfaces.
