Vase, Japanese, Edo period Genroku–Kyoho, ca. 1690–1730, Arita; blue-and-white porcelain vessel decorated with phoenixes, hares/rabbits, peonies, chrysanthemums, lotuses—kacho/kachôga flowers-and-birds iconography; one of four elements of a set; height 39.0 cm, diameter 20.3 cm., A tall flared vase with a white base color and blue painted decoration sits against a neutral gray background; the vase has a flaring rim and a slightly widened foot with a glossy surface, and its blue designs include floral motifs, scrolling foliage, and abstract wave-like patterns that cover the body and neck, with darker and lighter shades of blue creating contrast and depth, and small areas of white left unpainted within the decoration.
