Vase with cover, unknown ceramist, Japanese, Edo period Genroku–Kyoho, ca. 1690–1730, Arita porcelain, blue-and-white; decorated with phoenixes, hares/rabbits, peonies, chrysanthemums, and lotuses; one of the four elements of a fireplace set; height 59.0 cm, diameter 33.0 cm., A lidded porcelain vase standing against a plain background, decorated in blue and white. The vessel has a bulbous body tapering to a narrower base and a matching lid topped with a pointed finial. The surface shows dense painted ornamentation including floral motifs, leafy branches, stylized panels, and a bird in flight among the foliage. The blue decoration varies in tone from deep indigo to lighter blue washes, set against a white ground. The lid and neck carry coordinated patterned bands and small decorative panels, and the base has a repeating border motif. The background color is a neutral gray.
