Box with a lid, Chinese, Qing 1644–1911, 2nd half of the 18th century. Lacquered vessel decorated with figurative scenes of sages, scholars, and servants amid landscape motifs pine trees, rocks, rosettes, kikko tortoiseshell and geometric ornament. Height 11.0 cm, width 4.8 cm., A round, scalloped-edge carved box sits against a plain gray background; the box is predominantly deep red with carved surface textures showing raised patterns and relief scenes on the lid and sides, and there are small areas where the red finish is chipped revealing a few patches of darker and lighter tones beneath.
