Box with a lid; creator, Chinese; Qing dynasty 1644–1911; 2nd half of the 18th century. Vessel, height 11.0 cm, width 4.8 cm. Materials and/or decoration: figurative scenes of sages, scholars, and servants; landscape motifs with pine trees and rocks; rosettes; geometric ornament including kikko pattern., The image shows a round, scalloped-edge carved box in a deep red color against a muted gray background. The top surface features raised, textured carving with organic, leaf-like shapes and layered relief. The sides display a repeating hexagonal geometric pattern in low relief, with smooth raised bands encircling the box separating the top and bottom sections. The red finish varies slightly in tone, with some areas appearing darker and others slightly lighter, and there are small patches where the surface shows a different sheen. The background is a flat, even gray.
