Sage on a Mule, cloisonné enamel, Qing 1644–1911, 19th century, China; sculpture depicting a sage riding a mule with men/figurines, mules, birds and zoomorphic motifs, plant motifs, scrolls, meander ornament; height 26.0 cm, width 25.5 cm, depth 6.0 cm., A small sculpted animal resembling a horse or donkey stands with its head lowered, rendered in brown metal with darker and lighter brown variations and areas of greenish patina. It wears a decorative saddle cloth that hangs down on both sides, showing a colorful painted or inlaid pattern with teal, blue, red, green, and gold tones against a gold-edged background. The animal has a detailed mane, visible harness straps, and a tail draped to one side; the surface shows wear and textured tooling. The background is a smooth gradient of light gray to white.
