Made of light coffee-colored alabaster; stone base of feldspar with red and pink spots, painted with black lacquer. Chinese, Qing dynasty 1644–1911, 18th–19th century. Sculpture. Chinese Buddhism; Chinese art; figurine., A carved beige figure of a seated woman holding a child sits on a carved dark base; the woman wears flowing robes and an elaborate headdress, the child is seated on her lap, and both figures have smooth, rounded facial features and detailed drapery. The base has an irregular, rock-like form with glossy black and dark brown tones. The background is a gradient of dark gray to lighter gray near the bottom, and the surface beneath the object is a pale gray. Colors visible include beige, black, dark brown, dark gray, light gray, and pale gray.
