Tray, gift; wooden tray covered with black roiro lacquer; decoration: two wading herons and a clump of irises, made with gold and silver hiramaki-e three dark blue leaves. Meiji Period 1868–1912, 19th/20th century, Japan. Kachôga bird-and-flower subject. Height 3.5 cm; width 28.3 cm; depth 28.3 cm., A square black tray with rounded corners and raised edges features a painted decorative design showing a group of long, slender golden-yellow leaves and a few dark green blades extending across the black surface, a pair of golden-yellow frogs perched among the leaves, and a cluster of pale silvery-white flowers with soft yellow centers; the tray's exterior is dark brown to black and the background around the tray is gray.
