Candlestick shokudai, ; materials not specified; decorated with lotuses, turtles, cranes and depictions of a genius; Japanese, Meiji period 1868–1912, 2nd half of the 19th century; Japan; candlestick; height 37.0 cm, A metallic sculpture of a bird standing on a turtle, with the bird rendered in a gold and dark brown metal finish and the turtle in a darker brown metal; the bird has long slender legs, a curved neck, detailed feather textures on its body and a cluster of elongated tail feathers, and it supports a winding vine-like stem that rises upward to end in a flower-shaped cup with a gold tone; the turtle has a domed, segmented shell, short legs, a visible head and tail, and both figures cast faint reflections on a smooth gray surface with a plain light gray background.
