Candlestick shokudai, ; materials and iconography: lotuses, turtles, cranes, animals, depiction of a Genius; Japanese, Meiji 1868–1912, 2nd half of the 19th century; height 37.0 cm., A metallic sculpture shows a bird with long thin legs standing on the back of a turtle; the bird has textured wings with layered feathers and a curved beak, and some dangling feather-like elements hang from its body. The turtle has a domed shell with segmented plates, small legs, and a raised head with a rounded snout. The sculpture displays metallic tones including dark brown, bronze, and hints of gold against a smooth neutral gray background.
