Waterskin matara, Turkish, Ottoman dynasty 1299–1922, 2nd half of the 16th century. Kidney-shaped leather waterskin with an appliqué of a colorful lizard; bottle with rounded bottom, narrow neck for pouring and a small spout for drinking. Decorated with applied arabesques cut from shagreen and arabesques painted with gold. One narrow side bears a protective six-pointed star emblem Seal of Solomon intended to ensure the water's freshness. The leather matara is a copy of gold bottles set with precious stones used at the sultan's court; such leather bottles may have been used by the sultan during military expeditions. Only four comparable mataras are known worldwide. Vessel waterskin — height 23.0 cm, width 24.5 cm, depth 14.0 cm, weight 0.62 kg., An ornately decorated flat flask-shaped object with a rounded base and a short cylindrical neck, featuring a curved spout on one side and a small broken area on the rim, shown against a plain light gray background; the surface displays intricate raised patterns and swirling vine-like motifs in a palette of dark green, deep red, muted orange, and gold, with areas of worn dark brown and black patina, and a thin gold-colored border running along the outer edge.
