Sake bottle tokkuri, Japanese, Bizen workshop, Edo–Meiji period 19th century. Stoneware bottle with spherical belly and narrow cylindrical neck, height 18 cm, diameter 11.8 cm. Covered with brown glaze that becomes light coffee-colored and spotted on the upper belly and neck. Decorated on the belly with a branch of biwa Japanese medlar: fruits in green-yellow glaze inlaid with mother-of-pearl and leaves made using sprinkling on black lacquer. Function: vessel for sake., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow neck and small opening sits upright against a neutral background; the vessel has a textured surface in various shades of brown with subtle darker and lighter brown banding, a matte finish, and visible surface irregularities; a dark gray leaf-shaped applique rests on one side, and a pale circular decorative disk with a darker center is positioned nearby; the vessel casts a soft reflection on the smooth surface beneath it, and the background appears in muted gray tones.
