Candlestick mash'al, Islamic art, Persian, Safavid dynasty 1501–1736; 17th–18th century, Iran. Bronze candlestick in the form of a column standing on a low widening base, three sections separated by hachured rings. Ten-faceted shaft decorated with stylized plant ornament and a zigzag. Just under the upper edge is a band of inscriptions in nast'aliq script; beneath this are hunting scenes with riders and horses set against a dense tendril pattern. The base is decorated with representations of huntsmen; an inscription in Armenian characters runs on the edge and serves a decorative function. Height 28.0 cm; diameter 17.3 cm; weight 0.71 kg., A tall cylindrical metal object with a flared base and a narrower top, displaying intricate engraved floral and geometric patterns across its surface; the metal appears dark with areas of golden or brass-colored highlights on raised bands and decorative edges, and a few horizontal ridged bands encircle the cylinder; the surface shows repeated vine-like motifs and circular medallion designs, and the background is a plain light gray.
