Candlestick mash'al, Islamic art, Persian, Safavid dynasty 1501–1736. 17th/18th century, Iran. Bronze candlestick in the form of a column standing on a low, widening base with three sections separated by hachured rings. Ten-faceted shaft decorated with a stylized plant ornament and zigzag. Just under the upper edge is a band of nast'alik script; beneath this are hunting scenes and a dense tendril background. The base is decorated with figures of riders/huntsmen; an Armenian-script inscription on the base edge appears decorative. Height 28.0 cm; diameter 17.3 cm; weight 0.71 kg., The image shows a tall, tapered metal object with a flared base, decorated all over with intricate engraved patterns and repeated decorative bands; the surface appears dark bronze with areas of lighter golden highlights, and there are a few raised horizontal ridges with a greener gold tone encircling the form; the engravings include ornamental vine-like motifs and several medallion-shaped panels, and the overall color palette is dark brown, bronze, gold, and hints of greenish-gold against a neutral light-gray background.
