Inscription/attribution note: according to a Chinese specialist in Buddhist art, the sculpture appears to be contemporary and may come from the late Republic period, 19th century, though another note suggests 9th century. China. Sculpture, height 52 cm., A sculpted head in profile carved from pale stone with visible subtle discoloration and surface variations, mounted on a rectangular stone base; the head shows a smooth rounded skull, a prominent ear, defined facial features including a brow ridge, closed eye, nose, lips, and chin, with carved creases on the forehead and around the mouth; the base and head rest on a dark flat surface, and the background is a gradient of dark gray to lighter gray, with colors including pale off-white, gray, beige, and dark charcoal.
