Portable picnic set sagejûbako, noted. Japanese, Edo 1603–1868–Meiji 1868–1912, 19th century. Rectangular cabinet without side walls on a stand with two stacked food containers set incomplete; originally four; beside them on the stand are two tin sake bottles. Top tabletop has a handle, one small drawer, and a shelf for trays missing. Entire exterior covered with black roiro-nuri lacquer; interiors of food containers with vermilion lacquer. Surface ornament executed in hiramaki-e and nashiji techniques with motifs of blooming wisteria, camellias, plum trees, wolfberries, and rosette coins mon. Such portable eating sets were called in Japan kôchô, sagejû, hanami bentô and were popular from the Momoyama period through the 18th–19th centuries. Item; height 31.3 cm, width 30.5 cm, depth 17.8 cm, weight 2.29 kg., A cylindrical metal object with a rounded end is centered against a plain gray background; the cylinder appears worn and tarnished with a metallic gray surface showing darker and lighter patches, and the rounded end has a circular recessed area with a ring of slightly different shading and a small rectangular area that contains text which is visible but not described.
