Portable picnic set sagejûbako, Rectangular cabinet without side walls. On a stand are two food containers stacked set incomplete; originally four; next to the containers on the stand are two tin sake bottles. The top tabletop, with a handle, has one small drawer and a shelf for trays missing. Entire surface covered with black roiro-nuri lacquer; interiors of the food containers are vermilion lacquer. Ornament executed in hiramaki-e and nashiji techniques depicting blooming wisteria, camellias, rosettes coins, leaves, plum trees, and wolfberries; includes a mon. Such portable eating sets were called in Japan kôchô, sagejû, hanami bentô and were popular from the Momoyama period mid-16th–early 17th c. and in the 18th–19th centuries. 19th century Edo–Meiji period, Japan. Item measurements: height 31.3 cm, width 30.5 cm, depth 17.8 cm, weight 2.29 kg., A rectangular box with a glossy black front and sides sits centered on a pale gray background, showing a faint vertical scratch on the front surface and a subtle horizontal seam near the lower portion; the box top has a dark base with a decorative pattern in a brownish-gold color, and the scene includes reflections of the box on the smooth pale surface beneath it.
