Portable picnic set sagejûbako, Rectangular cabinet without side walls on a stand with two stacked food containers set incomplete; originally four; beside them on the stand are two tin sake bottles. Top tabletop has a handle, one small drawer, and a shelf for trays missing. Entire exterior covered with black roiro-nuri lacquer; interiors of food containers with vermilion lacquer. Surface ornament executed in hiramaki-e and nashiji techniques, depicting blooming wisteria, camellias, and rosettes/coins; also motifs of leaves, plum trees, and wolfberries; includes mon. Such portable eating sets were called in Japan kôchû, sagejû, hanami bentô and were popular from the Momoyama period mid-16th–early 17th c. and in the 18th–19th centuries. 19th century Edo–Meiji periods, Japan. Height 31.3 cm; width 30.5 cm; depth 17.8 cm; weight 2.29 kg., A small rectangular wooden stand with a glossy black finish and a rounded brass handle on top; the stand has an open central compartment with a raised shelf near the top and a small recessed area beside the shelf, and both side panels feature cutout shapes with gold-toned inner edges and subtle gold decorative motifs on the outer surfaces; the piece rests on short feet and shows colors including black, gold, brass, and a neutral gray background.
