Platter, ceramics, colored porcelain, Qing dynasty Tongzhi period, 1862–1874, Chinese, diameter 24.5 cm, height 5.8 cm. In the mirror, the Taoist sign Taiji appears as two stylized birds intertwined, surrounded by the symbols of the Eight Immortals and their corresponding trigrams. The outer rim is decorated with Buddhist symbols. Function: vessel., A shallow, oval ceramic dish with an octagonal foot sits on a reflective surface against a pale gray background; the dish has a pale greenish-white base color with decorative motifs in pink, red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and gold along its rim and sides, including a repeating pink border inside the rim, stylized floral or ribbon-like designs in blue, purple, red, and yellow on the exterior panels, and a green decorative band around the foot, with the upper edge highlighted in gold.
