Vase, Tôritei; satsuma; Japanese; decorated with insects, tree trunks, flowers, plant ornaments, birds, peonies, pines, crickets, monkeys, kacho flowers and birds, kachôga iconography, lotuses, irises, grasses, cranes; Meiji period 1868–1912, ca. 1885 Meiji 18; Japan, Kyoto, Awata; vessel; height 32 cm, width 15 cm., A tall cylindrical ceramic vase with an uneven rim and textured surface, decorated with painted natural scenes; the body shows a group of birds in flight and perched among pine-like branches, and a dense cluster of flowering plants and grasses at the lower portion, including blossoms and leafy stems. The painted colors visible include cream as the base color, greens for foliage, reds and pinks for flowers, yellow and purple accents in blossoms, brown and tan tones in branches and some birds, white on some bird plumage, and small touches of black for detailing. The vase has a slightly irregular, handmade appearance with a few raised protrusions on the sides and a scalloped lower edge, set against a neutral gray background that reflects faintly on the surface beneath it.
