Signed. 1701–1730 Edo Period, Japan; Ômi Eshu province. Tsuba; height 7.1 cm, width 6.7 cm., A circular metal ornamental object with an openwork design showing a stylized natural scene, primarily dark brown with areas of gold inlay and small highlights of grey and black; the outer rim is irregular and organic, enclosing carved tree-like forms, cloud or smoke-like swirls, and leafy plant motifs; a reclining animal figure appears near the lower left, decorated with gold patterns, and a group of small leaves and bamboo-like leaves with gold accents is along the lower edge; a central vertical opening and an adjacent rounded opening break the interior space, and carved textures and raised relief create a sense of depth across the surface.
