Crossguard tsuba, Sôten school, Kitagawa Sôten attributed, pines, bamboos, plants, waterfall, Uba under a pine tree by a stream looking at the sky where the moon emerges from behind clouds; positive openwork pattern, inlaid with gold and shakudo; oval tatemaru gata with irregular, rounded edge; signed. 1701–1730 Edo period, 1603–1868. Japan; Ômi Eshu province. Tsuba. Height 7.1 cm; width 6.7 cm., A round, openwork metal object with a dark brown surface and a few areas of gold detailing, shaped with an irregular outer rim and two central oval openings; the design shows a group of cloud-like swirls near the top highlighted in gold, a reclining animal-like figure on the right with gold decorative markings on its body, a few leafy plant forms and bamboo-like elements toward the lower left rendered in gold accents, and textured, slightly raised surfaces throughout creating a carved, sculptural appearance against a gray background.
