Netsuke in the shape of a twig with biwa loquat fruits, Gyokuhôsai Yamada Bunjiro, active in Edo, ca. 1850–1870, 2nd half 19th century ca. 1850–1860, Kaei–Ansei periods. Ivory, engraving, 2.0 × 4.2 × 2.8 cm. Signed Gyokuhosai. Miniature ivory-carved netsuke faithfully depicting a biwa branch; three fruits contain microscopic carved landscapes identified by inscriptions as Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the Sengenyama plateau Tamagawa. Sculpture, netsuke katabori., A small carved object rests on a smooth surface against a neutral gray background, showing a cluster of rounded forms resembling fruit with attached stylized leaves and a branching stem. The object is a warm creamy ivory color with darker brown shading in crevices and around the carved details, including star-shaped depressions on some rounded faces. The leaves display engraved vein lines highlighted by darker brown tones, and the surface has a glossy, polished sheen. The overall composition is compact and organic, with gentle curves and smooth transitions between the rounded elements and the connecting stem.
