Netsuke in the shape of a twig with biwa loquat fruits, Gyokuhôsai Yamada Bunjiro, active in Edo, ca. 1850–1870, 2nd half 19th century ca. 1850–1860, Kaei 5–Ansei 7. Ivory, engraving; netsuke katabori sculpture, height 2.0 cm, width 4.2 cm, depth 2.8 cm. Signed Gyokuhosai. Miniaturization of form with strong decorative value: the biwa branch is carved faithfully to the plant so the fruit is clearly recognizable. In three of the fruits the artist carved microscopic landscapes identified by inscriptions above them depicting familiar Edo places—Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the Sengenyama plateau across which the Tamagawa flows. Japanese, Edo period., A small carved object sits centered on a smooth surface against a plain background, showing a glossy cream and light tan color with darker brown shading in recessed areas; the carving features rounded bulbous forms and carved indented details, with a visible hollowed section and tiny textured carving inside, and subtle shadowing beneath it creating a soft gray shadow on the surface.
