Netsuke in the shape of a twig with biwa loquat fruits, Gyokuhôsai Yamada Bunjiro, active ca. 1850–1870, 2nd half 19th century ca. 1850–1860, Kaei 5–Ansei 7, Japan. Ivory, engraving; 2.0 × 4.2 × 2.8 cm. Signed: Gyokuhosai. Miniaturization of form with high decorative value: an ivory-carved biwa branch treated faithfully to the plant so the fruit is easily recognized. In three fruits the artist carved microscopic landscapes identified by inscriptions as Shinobazu Pond, the Tama River, and the plateau Sengenyama across which the Tamagawa flows. Sculpture, netsuke katabori., A small carved object in cream and light beige tones sits on a flat surface against a smooth gray background; the object resembles a cluster of rounded forms with a slightly glossy surface, showing subtle darker brown shading in crevices and along carved lines, and a few small dark spots and striations; there are curved and hollowed areas, thin connecting stems, and textured interior carving visible through an opening, all rendered in the same cream and beige hues with touches of darker brown accenting details.
