Bowl, Toyota Masanobu workshop, Satsuma ware, 2nd half of the 19th century Meiji period, Japan, Kagoshima. Deep bowl on a low ring-shaped base with a knobbed body and serrated rim, form reminiscent of a chrysanthemum. Outer wall decorated with clumps of blooming irises emerging from water; flowers and leaves painted in two-tone blue enamel, outlines and stylized waves/ripples in gold. Inner surface with a large gold chrysanthemum rosette imperial emblem in the mirror, Tokugawa family coat of arms inscribed in the center; side wall filled with dense, colorful ornament of various chrysanthemum flowers and butterflies in white, red, blue, gold, and green overglaze enamels and gold. Top edge finished with a uniform cobalt-blue valance. Signature on the base in gold reading: Satsuma yaki, Satsuma kuni, Ijun'in, Toyota Masanobu. Vessel height 12.0 cm, diameter 28.0 cm., A shallow scalloped ceramic bowl with a crackled off-white exterior rim and interior edge, decorated around its lower exterior with a dense floral and grass pattern in deep blue with accents of gold, and a darker blue scalloped interior band; the background is a smooth muted gray.
