Crossguard tsuba, Japanese, Edo period 17thβ18th century. Iron lined with multiple-folded impregnated canvas and covered with matte black lacquer; decorated with colored lacquer reliefs. Tsuba in the shape of an aoi with heart-shaped cutouts between the petals inome β boar's eye, with a kozuka hitsu ana hole. Obverse: relief motif of maple leaves β one red, the other white; reverse: delicately engraved plant twig. Unsigned. Function: sword crossguard katana tsuba. Dimensions: height 8.4 cm, width 8.2 cm, depth 0.5 cm., A roughly symmetrical dark object with an irregular, curving outline and two elongated central cutouts, showing a worn surface texture and edges with exposed lighter material; the surface has subtle carved or incised flowing line motifs and areas of scuffing; visible colors include black, dark brown, lighter brown at the edges, and faint gray highlights against a neutral gray background.
