Crossguard tsuba, Ichiryû Hitotsuyanagi Tomoyoshi; Ichiryû school. Japanese iron tsuba, early 19th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Rectangular with rounded sides and corners nadegaku gata, slightly convex with rounded edge uchi kaeshi. Surface delicately textured and decorated with two diagonal medallions — one with an openwork background and a dragon in maru bori technique, the other with a dragon in intaglio relief shishiai bori; this dragon ring motif is ryu-no maru. Dragon eyes accented with gilding. Origin: Mito, Japan. Height 8.4 cm; width 7.9 cm; depth 0.5 cm., A round, flat metal object with a weathered, dark brown surface floats against a neutral gray background; it has a few oblong cutouts and a decorative openwork area featuring a carved floral or scroll-like motif, with areas of lighter brown and subtle reddish tones where the metal shows wear.
