Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha 1871–1890. Japanese, Meiji period 1868–1912. Porcelain cloisonné totai-shippo technique, c. 1870–1880. Small ovoid vase with round flattened lid, height 12.4 cm, diameter 9.6 cm. Outer surface covered with lemon-yellow glaze with decorative crackle grid; interior and bottom white under transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers, executed in cloisonné enamel with brass wires and multi-shade green and brown enamels; the motif was carved into the surface before enameling. Maker’s marks: underglaze in cobalt “Nihon Shippo Kaisha sei zo” and an overglaze red-iron rhomboid cartouche with the sign “sho” presumed exporter’s mark. Attributed techniques and makers: porcelain cloisonné method developed by Tsukamoto Kaisuke 1828–1887; similar works by Takeuchi Chubei and Suzuki Seiichiro; possibly made by Takeuchi Chubei though unsigned., A rounded ceramic vase with a yellow ground showing a network of fine cracks, decorated with a winding vine and a few large green leaves in varying shades of green and some brownish-green areas, with pale blue-green vine stems and tendrils, a narrow pale rim at the top and a pale base, all set against a neutral gray background.
