Ginger vessel with lid, Nagoya Shippô Kaisha c. 1870–1880, Meiji period. Small ovoid porcelain vase with a round flattened lid. Exterior covered with a lemon-yellow glaze with a decorative grid of crackles; interior and bottom white with transparent glaze. Decorated with a naturalistic bean-vine motif of greenish-brown leaves and pink flowers, twining around the body and reaching the lid. Motif executed in cloisonné enamel using brass wires and multiple shades of enamel; motif was carved into the vessel’s surface prior to enameling totai-shippo technique. Porcelain cloisonné technique developed around 1868 by Tsukamoto Kaisuke; similar wares also made by Takeuchi Chubei and Suzuki Seiichiro; Takeuchi Chubei was among prominent craftsmen employed by Nihon Shippo Kaisha and this piece may be by him though unsigned.
