Crossguard tsuba, Kasuga; maker: Kunihide; Japanese; Edo period 17th century, 1603–1868; Higo province. Tsuba in the shape of an eight-petaled flower hachi mokkô; both hitsu cut into an identical multi-petaled shape. Central part enclosed by a fairly wide recessed circle stained with dark red lacquer, with openwork heart-shaped cutouts inome type at the edge between the petals, emphasized by delicate gold inlay. Surface partly of the mokume tetsu type imitation of wood grain. Function: sword crossguard katana tsuba. Diameter 8 cm; thickness 0.25 cm., A round, scalloped metal object with a central opening and a raised inner ring, shown against a light gray background; the metal surface is dark brown to almost black with a textured, slightly mottled appearance, and several heart-shaped cutouts around the edge are highlighted with gold-colored inlay; the inner area has irregular cut openings and a vertical central slot, and there are subtle variations of darker greenish patina along the recessed ring and inner edges.
