Crossguard tsuba, Kasuga school; maker: Kunihide. Tsuba in the shape of an eight-petaled flower hachi mokkô; both hitsu cut into an identical multi-petaled shape. Central part enclosed by a fairly wide, recessed circle stained with dark red lacquer, with openwork heart-shaped cutouts inome type at the edge between the petals, emphasized by delicate gold inlay. Surface partly of the mokume tetsu type imitation of wood grain. 17th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Japan, Higo province. Materials: tsuba iron. Diameter 8 cm; thickness 0.25 cm., A dark brown, round metal object with a scalloped outer edge and a recessed inner ring, showing a central cutout with curved openings on each side and a vertical central slot; several small heart-shaped cutouts along the scalloped rim are outlined in gold, and there are visible textures and subtle variations in brown and black on the surface against a plain gray background.
