Crossguard tsuba, Kasuga school; maker: Kunihide. Tsuba in the shape of an eight-petaled flower hachi mokkô; both hitsu cut into an identical multi-petaled shape. The central part is enclosed by a fairly wide, recessed circle stained with dark red lacquer, with openwork heart-shaped cutouts inome type at the edge between the petals, emphasized by delicate gold inlay. The surface of the guard is partly of the mokume tetsu type imitation of wood grain. 17th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Japan, Higo province. Tsuba; diameter 8 cm, thickness 0.25 cm., A round, scalloped metal object with a central open area and carved interior shapes sits against a neutral gray background; the metal surface is dark brown to near-black with visible textured grain and a slightly reddish-brown inner ring, and there are a few small heart-shaped cutouts around the outer edge highlighted with a bright gold color.
