Crossguard tsuba, Kaneie, school craftsman author; Japanese art; Japanese culture; Edo 1603–1868; weapons, melee weapons, swords, katana, sword crossguards; Tsuba in the shape of a quatrefoil mokkô with an uchikaeshi edge, katahitsu ana one side hole. Decorated in relief showing the sennin Gama sitting under a tree, holding a staff and looking at a three-legged frog; on the reverse a sketched landscape motif with a waterfall. Details eyes, pebbles, staff inlaid with gold and shakudo. 18th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan; Fushimi, Yamashiro. Tsuba; height 7.2 cm, width 6.8 cm, depth 0.4 cm., A flat, round object with a scalloped edge rests against a light background; its surface appears textured and worn, showing a dark brown to almost black patina with hints of rusty brown. The object has a couple of elongated openings near its center, and the edges show smooth, rounded contours. The background is a pale, muted gray and there are subtle shadows beneath the object giving a slight sense of elevation.
