Crossguard tsuba, Umetada, school; Umetada Shigeyoshi, / personal slogans / author. Oval tsuba tatemaru gata with a slightly rounded and raised edge of the uchi kaeshi type, seppa dai oval. Decorated on both sides with a relief motif of Chinese coins, details highlighted with gold inlay using the nunome zôgan technique. 1st half of the 18th century Edo period, 1603–1868, Japan. Materials/function: tsuba sword crossguard, height 8.7 cm, width 7.9 cm, depth 0.3 cm., A round, dark metal object with a slightly irregular rim sits against a gray background; its surface shows a textured, brownish-black patina with areas of worn, metallic sheen and traces of gold-colored inlay forming partial circular outlines and square motifs; there is a central vertical opening flanked by two rounded openings and a few raised circular medallion shapes with carved, linear patterns; the overall appearance is aged and metallic with visible scratches and subtle color variations of brown, black, gray, and gold.
