Crossguard tsuba, Japanese, early 19th century Edo period, 1603–1868. Oval tsuba tatemaru gata with a rounded edge maru mimi, unsigned. Decorated on both sides in low and high relief hirabori, takabori with landscapes, figures and architecture: obverse shows sennin Bashiko sitting under a pine tree on the seashore with a dragon above him in the clouds; reverse shows a hut on a cliff. Legend: Bashiko healed a dragon which in gratitude took him to the land of immortality. Materials and technique typical of Japanese sword fittings; height 6.6 cm, width 6.0 cm, depth 0.45 cm., A rounded dark metal object with a textured surface and two openings near its center, decorated with gold and lighter metallic inlay forming cloudlike and wave patterns and a branch with blossoms, and a small figure wearing a patterned garment and holding a bowl rendered in dark, gold, silver, and gray tones.
