Deity Li Shi, Chinese, nianhua New Year's picture, early 20th century, Shandong, graphic print; height 24.0 cm, width 21.0 cm., A monochrome line drawing on yellowed paper mounted on a gray background shows a standing male figure wearing layered robes with wide sleeves and pleated skirt-like garments, a tied sash at the waist, and a square hat; he has a mustache and beard and holds a spoon or ladle near his mouth with one hand while the other hand rests on a horizontal pole or beam behind him. Flanking him are draped fabric panels hanging from the pole and rectangular box-like structures on either side, and a few small rounded objects and organic shapes appear near the bottom edges. The drawing uses fine black lines and shading on a yellow-beige paper with a small red stamp-like mark near the upper right.
