Black-finished askos, unknown Campanian workshop, black-finished pottery, askos, Campania Italy. Askos with a profiled foot and a semicircular body closed at the top with a slightly recessed surface. Narrow neck ending in a wide rim. Ribbon-shaped handle attached to the neck and to the upper surface of the vessel. Appliqué of a female head glued to the upper surface of the vessel, probably Medusa, surrounded by a wreath of intertwined snakes. Finish is black, shiny, worn in places, particularly on the handle and the edge of the rim. Light orange clay. Handle and neck cracked and glued. Mid 3rd century BC., A small rounded ceramic vessel with a wide flattened body and a short flared neck topped by a flat disc-like rim, shown against a plain neutral background; the surface is predominantly black with visible small areas of worn lighter color and slight scuffs, and the base shows a few patches of lighter wear; the overall shape is symmetrical and compact with smooth curved contours and a glossy finish.
