Fragment of a lydion. Archaic period; 2nd half of the 6th century BC based on analogies, usually dated mid–late 6th century BC; examples dated c. 550–525 BC and broadly 6th century BC. Asia Minor possibly. Vessel type: lydion; function: toilet vessel. Fragmentarily preserved foot and lower part of the body. Foot flat, disc-shaped, conically recessed at bottom; medium-high cylindrical foot tapering slightly toward the bowl. Preserved part of bowl hemispherical. Top of the foot, the foot, and upper parts of the bowl covered with glossy varnish; remaining parts clay-colored. Outer surface of bowl decorated with four horizontal thin lines in light brown. Interior not smoothed, with visible turning traces. Outer part of foot covered with matte varnish. Materials/technique: thin-walled Eastern Greek ceramics; varnish color 10 YR 2/1 black; ornament colors 2.5 YR 4/3 reddish brown and 2.5 YR 4/6 red; clay color 5 YR 6/6 reddish yellow.
