Bottle, unknown Egyptian workshop; painted Coptic pottery vessel, 6th century, from Edfu. Bottle with a rounded, falling rim and concavely profiled neck. The almost cylindrical neck flows into rounded shoulders covered with fine ribs. Two handles one fragmentarily preserved are attached to the lower part of the neck and upper part of the shoulders. The ovoid body shows grooves on its lowest part traces of turning and rests on a ring-shaped foot. Outer surface brown and burnished. Made of A4 marl clay with limestone inclusions. Shoulders bear faint black-painted decoration: two arcades of parallel arches separated by a row of dots, arranged symmetrically one arcade between the handles. At the highest bulge of the body, below the damaged handle, there is an irregular concentration of a black substance, likely bitumen used to seal or repair the wall. Function: vessel/bottle.
