Three fragments of a Gospel book cover: two depict St. Mark and one St. Luke. Orthodox workshop. Luke the Evangelist; Mark the Evangelist d. ca. 68. Evangelists, icon covers, book iconography, inscriptions, saints. The plaques probably come from both sides of the binding. They depict: 1 Luke the Evangelist reaching for a pen; 2 Mark with an open book in his hands; 3 Mark sitting down to write with a pen in his hand. 17th–18th century, Russia. Cover. Height 9.4 cm; width 6.7 cm., A group of three irregular metal plaques displayed against a light gray background, each plaque showing worn engraved figures and decorative bordering; the plaques have a mix of coppery brown and greenish patina with darker and lighter variations, and show areas of tarnish and surface abrasion, with small holes near the edges and chipped or missing sections along their contours; the top plaque is positioned near the upper right and has a curved decorative lower edge, while the two lower plaques sit side by side with uneven, scalloped top edges and rough, broken lower margins, all three bearing engraved human figures seated and holding objects, with visible lines and hatching indicating folds and facial features in the metalwork.
