Dark blond wig in long shoulder-length curls; wide square white gauze collar trimmed with lace; ash-gray doublet with slits in the sleeves revealing a white shirt; wide black sash diagonally across the right shoulder trimmed with gold fringe. Background uniformly dark. Miniature, 1650–1670, height 9.6 cm, width 7.8 cm. Frame: none original frame lost. Formerly bound with several miniatures; inventory noted an inscription: van der Helst. Maker attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst; painter otherwise unknown. Subjects: men, military, male portrait, three-quarters., An oval oil painting shows a portrait of a person with pale skin and long brown hair set against a dark background; the face displays subtle pinkish tones on the cheeks and nose and a neutral expression with slightly parted lips. The sitter wears a high white collar with lace trim and a dark garment with lighter areas of wear or decoration, including a sash-like diagonal band and a lighter sleeve or cuff. The overall palette includes dark brown, black, white, pale pink, and muted beige, with areas of textured paint and visible age-related surface marks.
