Portrait of a military man after Bartholomeus van der Helst Bartholomeus van der Helst, 1613–1670. After Bartholomeus van der Helst; unknown painter. Half-length, three-quarter right, in military uniform. Dark blond wig in long shoulder-length curls, wide square white gauze collar trimmed with a strip of lace, ash-gray doublet with slits in the sleeves revealing a white shirt, and a wide black sash diagonally across the right shoulder trimmed with gold fringe. Background uniformly dark. Miniature, 1650–1670. Height 9.6 cm; width 7.8 cm. Originally bound with other miniatures; frame lost. According to inventory, the missing frame bore the inscription van der Helst., An oval portrait of a person with pale skin and reddish lips set against a dark background, showing long dark brown hair framing the face and a high white collar with a textured decorative band; the clothing includes dark and muted gray fabric with lighter gray and off-white accents and a few darker buttons, and the overall palette features shades of black, brown, gray, white, pale pink, and muted beige.
