Bishop Joseph Ignaz Philipp von Hessen-Darmstadt 1699–1768, son of Ernest Ludwig and Maria-Theresa de Croy; painted by Nilson, Johann Esaias 1721–1788. Oil miniature 1790, Germany, height 5.0 cm, width 7.1 cm. Seated in an armchair, almost straight ahead, hair gray, wearing a blue cloak with ermine over a white surplice richly decorated with lace, a gold bishop's cross on the chest; knee-length portrait showing bishop's vestments mantelletta, cope, rationale, powdered wig; background shows a fragment of an interior with a curtain. Binding richly decorated with stylized plant motifs mainly acanthus, gilt bronze., A small rectangular painted portrait set in an ornate carved frame with a hanging loop at the top shows a seated man wearing a powdered wig and richly decorated robes; he has a pale face with a faint smile and is gesturing with one hand while the other rests on his lap, and he wears a jeweled cross and a sash. The background includes draped fabric in dark red and brown tones and an upholstered chair with carved details. The frame is gold in color with elaborate scrolling ornament, and the portrait contains colors including pale skin tones, white, blue, red, brown, black, gray, and gold.
