Christian von Hessen-Darmstadt, Prince of Hesse as a child 1763–1830, unknown painter; male portrait boy, full figure in uniform; standing on a terrace in an open-air park setting. He wears a white wig, black tricorn hat with yellow trim, white uniform coat with red collar and cuffs, yellowish belt, black trousers and shoes, white gloves, and carries a silvery saber. Background: gray-blue sky and green tones gray-green, turquoise, celadon. Miniature, height 12.3 cm, width 8.6 cm. Binding: bronze and imitation wood. On the reverse of the binding: “N.35 Christian/Prinz von Hessen/Geboren 25.November 1763; gestorben 17. April 1830./In der Uniform d. Landgraf. Hesse-Darmstädtischen/Leibgarde zu pferde under der Regierung Ludwig IX.,/Landgrafen von Hessen-Darmstadt.” Additional inscriptions: S. 121, 1880; seal label., A framed colored portrait of a child standing on a stone step, wearing a tricorn hat, a light-colored coat with red trim at the collar and cuffs, dark knee-high boots, and a light sash around the waist, holding a thin sword or stick across the body; the background shows a pale sky and foliage beside a light stone wall or column. The frame is black with a thin gold inner trim and a small gold hanging ring at the top; visible colors include black, gold, light gray, pale blue, green, red, white, and brown.
