A young, dark-haired man with a slim face, short sideburns and hair combed sideways over his forehead towards the temples, wearing a green blouse and a white shirt with a slightly raised collar tied with a white drawstring, shown bust, turned three-quarters to the left, looking directly at the viewer. In front of him he holds a porte-crayon in his hand, resting on a small book with a red-brown cover. His oval face is illuminated from the darkness by a strong light coming from the right. Blue eyes, long, slightly upturned nose, clearly defined lips, chin slightly jutted forward. Black and brown background. At the top right, an inscription in white and yellow oil, calligraphic script: Walenty Wankowicz. | m. pr. pinxit. Before 1840, painting, 56.6 × 43 cm., A painted portrait of a man shown from the chest up against a dark background, with dark brown hair and light skin, neutral facial expression, greenish eyes, and sideburns; he wears a white collar and a dark green garment, and holds a pen in his right hand near the lower left, with visible warm skin tones and subtle shadowing in the composition, and colors including dark brown, black, green, white, beige, and touches of gold.
