Portrait of Nicholas I Radziwill 1366–1466?, legendary figure; unknown Polish painter. Oval portrait with a laurel wreath incorporated into the corner of the painting. Within the oval: bust, turned three-quarters to the right, a grey-bearded old man with short hair and a drooping mustache, wearing a black coat lined with lynx fur. Plain brown-olive background inside the oval. The oval rests on the back of a black eagle with spread wings, wearing a princely mitre and bearing the Trumpets coat of arms on its chest; the eagle holds a white ribbon with a Latin inscription. Background around the portrait is dark gray, smooth. Inscription in the lower left corner: N 5. Dated 1733–1737. Painting, 109.5 cm × 73 cm. Portraits with inscriptions; imaginary portrait; Radziwill family., A painted portrait of an older man shown from the chest up inside an oval wreath, wearing a dark robe and a spotted fur mantle, with a long grey beard and mustache and receding hair; his face has a pale skin tone with reddish and brown shadows and he has a solemn expression. The oval wreath is golden brown and the background inside the wreath is dark brown. Below the portrait there is a black two-headed eagle with outstretched wings and a small shield in blue and gold at its center, and a rolled scroll-like form beneath the eagle. The outer frame is a muted gold and the area outside the wreath is a greyish color. Overall colors visible include brown, dark brown, grey, black, gold, pale flesh tones, blue, and muted red.
