Sketch for the painting Potocka in Bakhchisarai, Jan Ciaglinski 1858–1913, painter; modernism; ca. 1897–1899; painting, The image shows a loosely painted interior scene with a group of loosely rendered figures and objects in muted browns, beiges, and grays, with touches of white, cream, pale green, and soft pink. In the foreground there is a reclining figure painted in cream and white tones beside a dark shape with hints of black and deep green, and scattered pale brushstrokes on the floor. Toward the center a standing figure in light colors with pale green accents is suggested next to another upright form in similar muted tones. To the right a tall figure in off-white with a bright red head covering stands near a group of figures rendered in soft olive, ochre, and muted purple. The left side contains a darker recess with shadowy shapes in deep brown and charcoal, and small areas of pale blue, yellow, and pink that imply distant figures or objects. Overall the brushwork is loose and sketchlike with visible strokes of brown, tan, gray, white, green, pink, red, and black.
